Gemma Ruiz Palà is a Catalan journalist and writer. Since 1996 she has worked for Televisió de Catalunya (Catalan Television) specialising in cultural coverage. Argelagues, her first novel, portrays the lives of three generations of women in twentieth century Southern Spain. With roots in Ruiz’s personal family history the novel also speaks of the universal efforts of so many women to adapt to the effects of the industrial revolution, Civil War and the patriarchal restrictions of their time. Ruiz uses vivid, canny language to give voice, in their own tongue, to women who were never allowed to speak for themselves.
